Planning an Early Spring Wedding and Embracing Colour- Seasonal Flowers, Tips and Inspiration from a Floral Designer

Early spring is a BEAUTIFUL time for weddings—nature awakens, blossoms unfold, and there’s a fresh energy in the air. From soft pastels to vibrant greens to punchy contrasts, early spring offers some of the most endearingly delicate and enchanting floral varieties of the year. If you're planning a wedding for March or April, there is the potential to include so much of the seasons joy within the designs that backdrop your celebration.

In this post, I’m sharing a curated selection of some favourite seasonal blooms, moments from previous Spring weddings, and a few tips for planning your day.

Seasonal Spring Floral Design

Spring weddings offer a vast scope for floral design, with many possibilities to create elevating arrangements across the backdrop of your day. Embracing the softness, texture and colour the season offers will beautifully ground your day to the time of year and provide joy to the senses of you and your guests.

Whether you are more drawn to the zingy or more pastel palette of the season, from large ceremony floral installations, to meadow aisle designs, to whimsical stem bottles, the designs can be both hugely impactful in the space from afar and right up close.

Tips for Planning an Early Spring Wedding

  • Embrace the Season – Spring is all about new beginnings, soft textures, and colour. Lean into the natural beauty of the season and it will beautifully ground and harmonise your day to the moment in time as well as allow for the best quality and unusual floral ingredients to be incorporated.

  • Celebrate and Respect the Environment – At MWG, sustainability is a core value here. From sourcing British-grown ingredients where possible to using reusable foam-free supporting design mechanics, we believe in celebrating and supporting our environment and community.

  • Prepare for the Weather – Spring sunshine is gorgeous, but of course it can be unpredictable. Be prepared with a wet-weather backup plan, and know that the warmth and colour of the season can be brought inside in the form of floral design.

  • Trust Your Floral Designer – Flowers are living, evolving, and beautifully unique, especially in spring when each bloom arrives with its own natural charm. Instead of fixating on specific flowers, think about the overall feel and trust us to complement and enhance it, in reflection and elevation of our curated bespoke design vision.

Seasonal Flowers for Early Spring Weddings

One of the joys of planning a spring wedding is having availability of some of the most romantic, fresh, and delicate flowers of the year. Choosing seasonal blooms ensures not only the best quality flowers but also supports sustainability and enhances the natural beauty of your wedding.

A handful of favourites and their qualities -

  1. Hellebores - coming in a range of shapes and tones from soft blush to deep plum, these bring the romance and movement. MWG particularly love the frilly and freckled double ellen varieties.

  2. Ranunculus - with their lush, layered petals, give peony vibes and come in so many beautiful colours from soft pastels to rich sunset hues.

  3. Poppies – With their delicate, crepe paper-like petals and bold or soft colours, poppies add a whimsical yet striking, lightness and drama to spring floral designs.

  4. Fritillaria – With their unusual shape, deep jewel colours and delicate movement, these lovely little bulb florals add intrigue and elegant shaping.

  5. Daffodils & Narcissi – The ultimate spring bloom, these cheerful flowers bring a playful, seasonal charm and pleasing pop of yellow. The pale and double centred varieties are a particular favourite here.

Early spring is a season filled with the most beautiful natural beauty and is a truly magical time to celebrate love. By embracing seasonal flowers, thoughtful design, and sustainable practices, your wedding can be backdropped with memorable, joyful and sensory elevating floral moments.
